INTRODUCING: WIIGZ

Electrifying live performances, large amounts of pleather and a mix of disco, funk, soul and modern house – these are the things that make local Brisbane duo ‘WIIGZ’. Fresh off the release of their new single ‘Red Hot Pants’, we sat down with the faces behind the name to find out more about the audio-visual sensations.

For those who haven't heard the origin of your name – can you tell us where the name WIIGZ came from?

In 2018 we were getting ready for a night out. We were getting all dressed up and dancing to disco on full blast when Zoe discovered two wigs glowing from under her bed. We immediately knew we had found our band name and never looked back.

You've been making waves in the Brisbane scene with electrifying live performances - what’s your favourite aspect about performing live?

Everything. It’s the best feeling in the world to perform to a crowd of people. You can feel the energy of the room charging through you, it makes you high. We also love a good hair whip - that’s our second favourite aspect (laughs)

What’s your strategy for getting a crowd pumped?

We are still learning how to pump up a crowd and it can be very daunting, but honestly if you just look like you’re having fun, they are going to have fun. We had an outfit change mid set at our headline gig back in June and it made the crowd go crazy, so we are going to have to do it every gig from now on!

In the past your music has been described as a mix of disco, funk, soul and modern house. Were there any artists you listened to that helped to inspire this?

We love Daft Punk, Jessie Ware and Dua Lipa. Last year was a phenomenal year for disco pop!

Everyone has been waiting to hear your latest work, "Red Hot Pants", and it's finally here! Tell us about the single.

It’s very different to ‘WWWWWHY’, in that it’s more downtempo and has a very commanding bassline throughout it. We like to say it is the cat-walking song, so you have to dig up your hot pants and strut while you listen to it. The song is (obviously) about a pair of red hot pants that Zoe bought last year. They are proper vintage hot pants and are the perfect fit on her. They are so iconic we just had to write a song about them.

You also operate as an audio-visual art collective and collaborate with other creatives in Brisbane- is it important to you to create content in a multitude of different forms? Are there any other avenues that you may perhaps be interested in?

We have backgrounds in film, fashion, fine art and graphic design, so we love to integrate that into WIIGZ wherever we can. Both of our music videos were self directed, produced and edited and we design the artworks for our songs. We hope to be able to build WIIGZ into a massive audio visual production.

Do either of you have any habits that help your creativity?

MANIFESTATION!

It's very prominent in the way you style yourselves for music videos and live performances that you are both heavily into fashion - who are your influences?

We love getting all dressed up. Both of us dress quite casually in everyday life, but for WIIGZ the clothes we wear help us to get into character. We are still trying to refine our look, and want to go as big as we can. At the moment we love pleather!

What can we expect to see from you in the second half of the year? What’s next for WIIGZ?

We are going to continue grinding on new music and levelling up our live performances! You’ll just have to keep your eyes peeled.
