“For women’s international day 2021, I choose to challenge gender stereotypes and homophobia”

— ABISHA

HI ABISHA, HOW ARE YOU FEELING TODAY?

I'm feeling good, thank you!! Lots to look forward to and I hear that warmer weather it's on its way which makes me so happy!

YOU RELEASED YOUR SINGLE “TIME ALONE” LAST YEAR, WAS THIS INSPIRED BY LOCKDOWN LIFE, WAS WRITING MUSIC WHAT KEPT YOU SANE THROUGH IT? AND DO YOU HAVE ANY STRATEGIES ON HOW TO GET THROUGH OUR THIRD ONE?

‘Time Alone’ wasn't actually inspired by lockdown, but it was probably heightened by what I was feeling at the time and intensified it. I wrote the song about feeling really overwhelmed by little things and the need to constantly take myself away to recharge my energy. I love being around people and being in social situations, but I also need a little bit of time alone. Writing has definitely kept me sane; I've had a lot going on in my personal life throughout the lockdowns and definitely had some lows, but I've written some of my songs because of it so I'm so grateful for that! Being able to write and turn situations into a song means that there's always a positive from everything, which I love. I wish I had a strategy to get through the most recent lockdown! I think just take it easy and don't be too hard on yourself. Do what YOU need to do to get through one day at a time, however small, and find joy in the small things like a good coffee and phone calls with friends. Stay connected to people and don't lose sight of the end of this!

I THINK MY FAVOURITE TRACK OF YOURS SO FAR IS REAL LIFE, I FEEL LIKE IT’S REALLY RELATABLE AND GIVES ME A REAL SENSE OF LOVE IN THE WORLD OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY. HOWEVER, WHAT ACTUALLY IS THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS?

Thank you! Real Life is about wanting a genuine connection with someone, rather than a superficial one. So many relationships now rely on social media and technology and encounter long distances which can all be so difficult. I wanted to write about just being able to be with someone in real life and have them all to myself without all of the external factors which can make it go wrong.

YOU HAVE A GREAT DISCOVERY STORY THAT INCLUDES LEGENDARY BRITISH PRODUCER MIKE CHAPMAN, TALK ME THROUGH WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED WHEN YOU MET?

I met Mike in a bar in South London not long after I moved to London and he invited me to come and write and record at his studio. The rest is history!

YOUR MUSIC VIDEOS THUS FAR, HAVE FELT REALLY PERSONAL ALONG WITH YOUR LYRICS, IS IT HARD FOR YOU TO BE AS TRANSPARENT AS YOU ARE, WITH OPENING YOUR LIFE UP TO YOUR AUDIENCE?

Not at all, I find it really therapeutic to be so raw and open through my music and videos. The writing process is so healing to me that bringing it to life through a video feels so magical and releasing it into the world feels like letting go, it's freeing. I also love being authentic in my music because I hope that if anyone out there is going through a similar situation, they'll feel less alone.

I FEEL YOU HAVE A REAL SENSE OF EMPOWERMENT THAT I REALLY ADMIRE, COULD YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY OF EMBRACING YOURSELF. DO YOU THINK BEING OPEN WITH YOUR SEXUALITY FROM THE GET-GO HAS ATTRIBUTED TO THAT?

Thank you! It has definitely been a journey. Growing up I felt massively like an outsider and felt that I didn't fit in because I looked completely different to everyone around me. Moving to London definitely helped with this because I no longer felt like an alien, and I began to really explore who I was through fashion, hairstyles and embracing my roots. I have always felt proud of my sexuality and have always been open to it. There are obviously times when it feels slightly uncomfortable to bring it up, but I never hide it. I love that I love girls, and by me being proud of it, I hope that it empowers others to own who they love and be proud of it too.

HAVING BEEN ON SET WITH YOU I AM SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT YOU USED TO BE REALLY SHY, WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS HELPED TO BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE IN RECENT YEARS?

Haha, I can still be shy in certain situations, but I'm far more confident than I used to be. A lot of it was seriously adopting a 'fake it ‘til you make it' mentality. I learned that pretending that I was confident and comfortable lead to me actually becoming confident and comfortable. Especially with performing and shoots, if the artist visibly feels awkward, then everyone else feels awkward too, so pretending to feel confident means that the audience enjoys themselves and I relax more and start to feel confident too!

YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN VERY OPEN ABOUT SHARING YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES IN ALL YOUR INTERVIEWS AND A REAL ROLE MODEL TO OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING. DOES THIS COME NATURALLY TO YOU, WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT ITS’ IMPORTANT TO DO SO?

It does come naturally because I've accepted that they are a part of who I am and why I am how I am in many ways. It's our upbringings and experiences that shape us and owning them is so important. I think it's important to share them so that anyone who may have or have had the same experiences feels seen and heard and knows they're not alone in feeling different.

KNOWING THAT RIHANNA’S LOUD ALBUM INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE AN RNB DIRECTION WITHIN YOUR MUSIC STYLE, WHAT OTHER WOMEN ARE YOU INSPIRED BY IN MUSIC OR LIFE?

There are so many women in music that inspire me, from artists I loved growing up such as The Spice Girls, Britney, and Shania Twain to the women who are absolutely smashing and re-defining R&B today like Jhene Aiko, SZA, Nao and so many more. In life, my mum inspires me more than anyone, she worked so hard to give me the best upbringing and opportunities in life and I hope to be able to repay her for that one day.

WITH LIVE MUSIC & PERFORMANCE UP IN THE AIR, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE IN 2021, OTHER THAN BEING ABLE TO LEAVE THE HOUSE FOR MORE THAN EXERCISE AND WORK?

I'd like to get back into acting, I've been saying that for a while now, but I've felt really strongly about it since the beginning of this year. I'm also just looking forward to being in the studio as much as I can and writing more great songs so that when we can perform live again, I have a load of new songs to play!
